Recovering A Corrupt Hard Drive
That Is Encrypted
About Hard Drive Encryption
Hard drive encryption uses symmetrical and
logarithmic keys in order to fully encrypt the
drive. In terms of security this makes the drive
extremely difficult to access unless you can
gain access to one or both of these keys. NTFS
formatted hard drives or partitions use an
encryption system known as an Encrypting File
System, or EFS for short. In order to retrieve
information from a corrupt encrypted hard drive
or to recover an encrypted file or folder from a
hard drive it is necessary to have the
encryption password. Alternatively it is
necessary for the SAM database used by Windows
2000, XP, and 2003 to still be resident on the
computer.
Logging On With Admin Rights To Retrieve
Individual Files
If you need to recover one or several files then
ensure that you are logged on under the
administrator user in order to proceed. Once you
begin the retrieval of the files you will
usually be asked to provide the encryption
password in order that you can proceed normally
with the recovery. If you are attempting to
restore an entire partition or hard drive then
the process is essentially the same.
Encrypted Drives With No Password
Problems can occur, however, if you are
attempting to recover an encrypted drive that
you do not have the key or password for. This
can occur, for instance, if an employee encrypts
a disk on a work computer and then leaves the
company without informing you of the new
password. In some instances these can be
virtually irretrievable through normal methods.
Some data recovery services may still be able to
help but very specialist knowledge is required
to get through the encryption and then to
recover the files.
Recovering Encrypted Hard Drives
Encrypting a hard drive is a superb way of
securing all your personal information and
sensitive information that you do not want
others to access. As long as you retain the
password that you set and retain admin user
rights to your computer then you will be able to
use any of a number of different data recovery
packages in order to recover your hard drive or
individual files found on your hard drive.
