Active@ Kill Disk – Hard Drive Eraser

LSoft Technologies Inc. publishes this application that lets you format your hard drive without the possibility of recovery. It is a small and strong DOS application that permits you to destroy all of the data on floppy and hard drives totally. Doing this will prevent all future data recovery of deleted folders or files. It is a security application for unrecoverable data elimination for any system possible of booting in DOS mode from a floppy drive. It gets to the drives data on a physical level by way of BIOS bypassing logical drive structure organization. It does not matter what operating systems and file systems are on the machine, it can be Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, Unix for PC, or Linux. This program conforms to the United States Department of Defense clearing and sanitizing standard. DoD 5220.22-M. They assure you that once you use this program on your system, all your sensitive information is gone forever. It is highly recommended that you use this program for any floppy or hard drives; you want to get rid of, re-use, recycle, donate, or sell to someone.

It will work on Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It is freeware with no limitations.

Pros: It is free and does a fair job of low-level erasing.
Easy to use and well designed.

Cons: The free version is a demo that only permits the all zero single pass option and does not do the DoD level cleaning.

AbsoluteShield File Shredder

SysShield Consulting publishes this file shredder. This program will allow you to permanently get rid of files and folders from you computer easily without the worry of data recovery. This tool is integrated with the Windows shell and you will be able to start shredding by selecting files or folders and right clicking on them and picking AbsoluteShield File Shredder from Windows Explorer. You will be able to set the tool to use the standard seven-pass, quick two-pass file shredding, or any other customized wiping method. It there is a file or folder you want to get rid of for sure – this is a great program to do it with.

It will work on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It is freeware with no limitations.

Pros: Very easy to install and use.
Fast download.

Simple File Shredder (no longer available)

Scar5 Software publishes this little shredding utility. It will safely get rid of files so they wont be recovered. When you use this program to shred a file, the file is over-written with random bytes before it is permanently deleted. The file would be worthless if ever recovered with a restore program. It has a completely customizable System Shredder that you can use to group browser cookie, cache, and history files to be found and shredded.

It will work on Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server. It is freeware with no limitations.

Pros: Shreds free space.
Its uses the same secure methods that some other complete programs use.

Con: Causes problems on some systems.

If you need to get rid of files, folders, or everything on your drives, then try one of the free programs to erase or shred it all. You wont have to worry about it ever again.
